The cactus wren was officially named the state bird of Arizona in 1973. The cactus wren is brown and tan with a black speckled chest and white lines over each eye. It is about eight inches long and likes to build nests in the protection of cholla cactus and other thorny desert plants. It usually builds many nests but lives in only one.
